Doctors and Staff at The Veterinary Standard

Jeffrey F. Messman, DVM
Dr. Messman was born and raised on his family farm in Chelsea, MI.  He greatly enjoyed the rural way of life.  He was involved in 4-H for many years and also spent time working at a local dairy farm.  He also spent a large amount of time working with Dr. David Bucholtz, the original founder of The Veterinary Standard.  In 1992 Dr. Messman received his DVM from Michigan State University.  He started working at The Veterinary Standard after graduation.  Dr. Messman's major interests are in Dairy production, animal nutrition, and milk quality.  Outside of the veterinary profession, Dr. Messman enjoys spending time with his wife Rita and his two children Stephanie and Jake.  He is also very active in the local antique tractor pulling circuit.
Kara L. Hieber, DVM
Dr. Hieber was born and raised at her family farm in Bronson, MI.  She grew up very active in 4-H and had a passion for livestock.  Dr. Hieber earned her DVM at Michigan State University in 2000.  She started working at The Veterinary Standard after graduation.  Dr. Hieber is particularly interested in equine reproduction, lameness, dairy herd health and preventive medicine.  On her spare time she enjoys spending time on her own family farm with her husband Charlie and her four children Valerie, Amanda, Cassidy, and Stewart.
Andrew M. Smith, DVM
Dr. Smith was raised in Wauseon, Ohio.  Growing up he was very involved in raising pigs, goats, and horses.  After spending a summer with his local veterinarian, Dr. Smith knew he wanted to pursue veterinary medicine as a career.  Dr. Smith earned his DVM at Michigan State University in 2002.  He started working at The Veterinary Standard after graduation.  His interests include dairy production medicine, sick cow diagnosis and treatment, as well as equine medicine and nutrition.  On his spare time he enjoys spending time with his busy family.  He is married to his wife Jennifer and has three kids named Grace, Alex, and Sophie.  He also enjoys playing the trombone and fishing.
Chelsea L Render, DVM
Dr. Render was born and raised on her family Haflinger farm in Manchester, MI.  She received her BS and DVM from Michigan State University in 2014.  She is very excited to return to her home roots.  At MSU she has had extensive training in large animal medicine and practice.  She also was a participant in the Michigan State University Food Fellowship program where she helped to write our current farm bill in Washington DC.  Dr. Render is very excited to be a part of our team, and she is looking forward to meeting all of our clients. 
Michelle Jedele, Office Manager
Michelle has been the office manager at The Veterinary Standard since 2014.  Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her husband Todd and her two daughters.
Darla Hock, Secretary
Darla has been with The Veterinary Standard since 2002.  She is married to her husband Dale.  She enjoys spending time with her four children and seven grandchildren.
